Project Objective, Challenges Faced and Outcome
The project had two main objectives:
- To reduce traffic congestion and increase road capacity to accommodate future traffic volumes.
- Improved safety, local amenity and access for all road users including cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users.
MCC installed over 1km of DN300 watermain in both PE and MSCL to high standard of quality, maintaining standards set by Lendlease, BCC & QUU. Completed over 20 live connections into QUU watermain network & cutover private properties in line with Lendlease safety, environmental & community requirements. We liaised closely with principal contractor & QUU (asset owners).
The main challenges revolved around the high volume of traffic with 63,000 vehicles using KSD daily. Work was required to be complete in a timely manner to not interfere with daily traffic. The project required excavating around underground & overhead services, trees & residential properties whilst complying with safety & environmental standards.MCC carried out nightworks to minimise impact on peak hour traffic requiring that work needed to be completed on time, effectively & efficiently for roads to reopen by 5am.
